SECURITY COUNCIL No. 1 - Israel, 5 June 1967

 

In May 1967, Egyptian President Nasser expelled the United Nations Emergency Force which had been established there in 1957 following the Suez-Crisis in 1956. As a next step Nasser consolidated troops and tanks at the Israeli border and closed the Straits of Tirana for all Israeli ships. As a response, Israel mobilized as well. On 5 June 1967, Israel launched a surprise attack on Egypt and Syria as a preemptive strike following Egyptian mobilization and regular border incidents with Syria.

SECURITY COUNCIL No. 2 - Falklands, 3 April 1982

 

The Falkland Islands and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands have for a long time been subject to disputes between Argentina and the United Kingdom. On 2 April 1982 Argentina invaded and occupied the Falkland Islands and South Georgia.

SECURITY COUNCIL No. 3 - Rwanda, 7 April 1994

 

On 6 January 1994, the UN Security Council voted on the establishment of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR) - S/RES/893 (1994). On 11 January 1994, Lieutenant General Dallaire, Commander of UNAMIR reported information on the planned assassination of the President as well as on planned mass killings. On 6 April 1994, an airplane carrying the Presidents of Burundi and Rwanda is shot down – RTLM accuses Belgian UN troops of involvement. On 7 April 10 Belgian soldiers are killed by soldiers of the Rwandan Army.

After the terror attacks on the World Trade Center in New York on September 11, US demanded extradition of Bin Laden by Afghan government; 7 October begin of US Operation "Enduring Freedom"; first SC Meeting on the situation in Afghanistan 13 November.
