What is a Model United Nations (MUN)?
A Model United Nations (MUN) is a meeting where students authentically simulate negotiations of specific committees and organs of the United Nations.
Participants choose a country and research their chosen country’s position regarding a specific topic. After preparation, they step into the shoes of diplomats and represent this country in a committee. They debate, convince, bring forward new solutions and solve a world conflict with their own resolution.
The Vienna Model United Nations Club (VMC) is the centre for all MUN related activities in Vienna.
Why participate in MUNs?
Thousands of students actively take part in MUN debating, either at training sessions at Clubs like the VMC, or at international conferences that are organised all over the world, such as the Vienna International Model United Nations (VIMUN), annually held in August at the United Nations Office in Vienna.
The motivation for participation in MUNs are simple, yet very convincing:
improve your negotiation and public speaking skills
become a better team-worker and leader
get an insight into an UN diplomat’s work
make practical use of your political knowledge
meet and stay in touch with students from all around the world
What are activities of the VMC?
The VMC is dedicated to involve interested students into the fascinating world of MUNs. Our training sessions take place each month during the academic semester. Each session consists of two meetings which take place on two Saturdays in this month. Both dates and topics, as well as the country positions will be available on our website (see "Sessions"). The meetings take place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and students are simulating a meeting of the Security Council.
In addition to our regular MUN Sessions, we offer monthly MUN workshops to give newcomers a chance to get an insight into MUNing and to learn the procedures and basic skills that are needed to successfully participate in MUN conferences as well as our sessions.
Furthermore, we visit international MUNs together and our team members assist in preparing delegations from Austria.
